Analysis Of The Novel Orleanna Price And Caroline Compson

Orleanna Price and Caroline Compson, two southern women tremendously alike in many ways, but substantially different when it comes to the pivotal moments of their family’s lives. Both of these women, on many levels, could be considered the same, despite the thirty-year time gap between their stories, but I aim to prove their differences. While Caroline Compson is an all to classic 1930’s help assisted housewife, her role as a â€Å"yes dear† passive wife makes her an utterly incompetent mother, breeding four children who ultimately either kill themselves, leave home, or worst of all, become a sociopathic narcissist, leaving the mentally handicap son as the hands down winner of most â€Å"normal†. While I do believe that Orleanna Price’s character is†¦show more content†¦Even though Caroline Compson also dealt with the death of a child, her choosing to remain stagnate solidifies her place in a long line of passive women to go down with their men. Therefore, however many similarities that can be found between Orleanna and Caroline are utterly dismissed when the whole picture of their characters is taken into account. Though she had her faulting moments in the beginning I believe Orleanna Price was never truly submissive to her husband, but submissive to the time she lived in. Even though both Orleanna and Caroline were married to awful husbands, Mr. Compson never truly ostracized his wife like Mr. Price, however erratic she behaved, Mr. Compson still gave a small degree of respect to his wife, while Mr. price only viewed Orleanna as free home labor. This again highlights the differences between these two women, if we take a general tally Caroline Compson never experienced half the degree of hardships that Orleanna did in the Congo, therefore should not Caroline be the one more incline to become a better woman and mother? As we can see, when truthfully compared, 3even with their similarities, Orleanna can never verifiabl y be placed in the same category of passive as Caroline Compson, though similar, Caroline’s choice to remain docile in the face of disaster completely sets her apart from Orleanna, who in the end,

Health Insurance and Affordable Care Act free essay sample

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also called ObamaCare or the Affordable Care Act, is a United States federal statute signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. This is one of the most consequential expansions from the government and administrative overhaul of the U. S healthcare system, since the establishment of Medicaid and Medicare of 1965. The purpose of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is for raising the rate of health coverage of Americans and lowering the total of health cost. There are several pros and cons of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and I would like not only to explain them but the policy itself also. There are several different pros and cons concerning ObamaCare but first, we will have to divide what the pros are for the different economic classes of Americans and the type of person you are, because some effects apply to lower class when they don’t to upper class and the effects of it may be different if you are a woman or if you’re a senior citizen. For the average American, which are those making fewer than 400% of the Federal Poverty level (FPL), would see decreases in their insurance premiums. The overall quality of healthcare would increase, while the cost will lower. However, 1% of businesses will be affected by the cons of ObamaCare, which is the possible decrease of health plans for employees received by employers and/or the amount of work they do. For lower class people ObamaCare will benefit them greatly, especially those with no insurance at all. Albeit, some states will have the option of not participating in that, despite that there would be 100% funding and 90% next the next year. Some states would rather save money, but some states will be able to gain money from this. Some of the effects of ObamaCare could include reforms to Medicare which could affect seniors negatively and positively. Small businesses will receive benefits from this while those businesses that don’t already provide insurance to their employees will not. A huge benefit is that the small businesses with less than 25 employees will receive million in tax credits for them. Americans were opposed to ObamaCare before it was even passed. Several promises were made that ObamaCare would lower premiums, but instead health care rose by 9%. Employees expect this to continue rising. A projection made from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reveals that the cost to implement has skyrocketed to $1. 76 trillion over the next 10 years. In 2011, House Republicans found emails about Democrats and Pharmaceutical Lobbyists meeting in secret cooperating to get ObamaCare passed. Part of the deal was that lobbyists promised a multi-million dollar advertising campaign promoting the proposed law in exchange for special deals from ObamaCare Administration. Democrats began to face angry crowds because of concerned citizens expressing their displeasure with the proposed health care legislation and the direction of Congress. March 20th, 2010, Tea Party groups met to protest the passage of ObamaCare. This protest was an example of other protests going around the country because of citizens’ dislike of the ObamaCare program. Democrats still urged and fought to pass ObamaCare albeit the displeasure of citizens. March 21st, 2010, howbeit 48% of Americans opposing the unpopular health care bill, House Democrats still voted for the bill. March 23rd, unpopular ObamaCare was signed into law by the president. November 2nd of 2010, Americans elected a majority of Republicans into the House, to push for repeal. Studies have shown that since the ObamaCare had been passed over the displeasure of Americans, it would cost the Democrats the election. January 19th, 2011 House Republicans voted to repeal ObamaCare, but it was reenacted again. Some Americans still don’t like the law, but parts of it are still in place. When ObamaCare was first passed, almost everyone thought that states would be able to could and would create its own health insurance exchange. This law required that states had to expand Medicaid, or accept the consequences, which were possibly severe federal penalties too. States want to be able to create their own exchanges and monitor them, but the federal government would not like that. The federal government wants to keep the control over the exchanges and run ObamaCare across the country. Then they made a law, which was disliked among many, but favored among most. ObamaCare also creates new obligations for the states even if they don’t opt it. States believe that they will be able to manage the exchanges better and that it’s their duty to do so; however the federal government says No and will not let the states do it. Liberals behind the law are denouncing the governors of the 26 states, that don’t find ObamaCare to be a good thing, to be federalist hypocrites. As a final point, ObamaCare has done many things to help Americans and to affect them negatively. I think it really decides on who you are to know if it is helping you are not. I cannot say that I am completely with ObamaCare but I do agree with parts of it. There’s really no way to tell if ObamaCare is good or not, there’s only several opinions. It’s for you to decide if you think ObamaCare is good or not. References: gpo. gov. (n. d. ). Retrieved from http://www. gpo. gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-111publ148/html/PLAW-111publ148. htm Wallace, G. My Acquaintance With Africa Essays - Islam And Women, Kadra Yusuf

My Acquaintance With Africa My Acquaintance With Africa I thought I knew enough about Africa, this wonderful and strange continent with a hot tropical climate and a wealthy nature, which is populated by many different nations and tribes. I saw many movies, mostly about African nature and often read newspapers or magazines about frequent wars and economical problems. But I never made acquaintance with people who originated from Africa. Thus, it was really interesting to talk, even if a little to my classmate Kadra, who not long ago, two years, came here from the small East African country Djibouti. I was interested in how she has lived and thought and what problems have worried this young, beautiful black woman. In the period of two years, since I came from Ukraine and have lived in Chicago, I have known six or seven Afro-Americans. Although we worked together we had never talked about their problems. Maybe, it isn't done among the black people, all the more among the Americans. So, I really know nothing about native Africans. No wonder I always thought they are very poor, not well educated and cut away from world civilization. It was a big surprise when Kadra told me that she finished high-school in her motherland and what's more in French, which is the second, after her native Arabic, official language in Djibouti. Kadra speaks English sufficiently, clearly expresses her thoughts and doesn't stop to find the suitable words as I often do. She plans to continue going to college in order to get a degree in English, find a better job and probably go back to motherland where she can teach English to her compatriots. Of course, Kadra told me about her native country Djibouti, which I know nothing about. It is a beautiful country located on the East coast of Africa, on the shore of the Red Sea. The territory, divided into a low coastal plain, with mountains behind, and an interior plateau, is arid, sandy, and desolate. The climate is generally hot and dry. Two main ethnic groups, Somali and Afar, live there and almost all people profess the Muslim faith. It's a republic and the head of state is a president. The economy is a weak development and people often go to other countries hoping to find a job. I was interested that people in Djibouti are mainly Muslim, to whom I never talked before. So I began to ask questions about this topic and discovered the huge, mysterious, and alien Islamic world. It seems to me religion has great importance for Kadra; it is her spiritual universe, it's like her second ?I?. It is strange that in the USA, with its furious rate of life, with its interlacing of nations, cultures, religions and as a result- a prevailing ideology of idealism, on the top of which is ?I? and ?myself?, Kadra continues to live in her closed Muslim world. I found many new things in her world and heard about the customs and laws ascribed to respect and help older people and parents. Muslims are not allow drinking alcohol, never using drugs and are faithful in marriage. I found that Islam allows getting divorced, if a man or woman doesn't love anymore. It changed my assumption about a woman in the Islamic world as a slave who carries her own cross to the end of her life. On the other hand, I have understood, or to be more specific, I felt how dangerous and awful is Islam. Since childhood Kadra has followed Muslim laws, gone to the Muslim school and known only this world because she lived among people who blindly submitted to Islam's canons. When I asked her how her world outlook has changed for the last two years and how she imagines her future life here, in the USA, I was shocked by her firmness to live further in the Muslim world and her confidence that nothing can change. At first it seems she, as do most of us, works, goes to college, and drives a car. From the outside she looks like everyone, nothing particular, but what acts in this young soul, as though the black darkness covers her. I had this feeling when he

Points of the Compass in Spanish

Points of the Compass in Spanish The directions of the compass in Spanish are vaguely similar to those of English and ultimately come from the same Indo-European roots. However, Spanish also has synonyms for some of the directions as well as special adjective forms that should be learned. Lists of Spanish Words for Directions of the Compass The primary points of the compass include: norte - northeste (or, less commonly, oriente) - eastsur - southoeste (or, less commonly, occidente)- west As in English, the directions can be combined to indicate intermediate points: nornoreste - north-northeastnoreste - northeastestenoreste - east-northeastestesudeste - east-southeastsudeste - southeastsudsudeste - south-southeastsudsudoeste - south-southwestsudoeste - southwestoestesudoeste - west-southwestoestenoroeste - west-northwestnoroeste - northwestnornoroeste - north-northwest In some areas, the use of sur- as the stem meaning south is preferred, so youll also hear the variations such sureste and suroeste alone as well as in combination forms such as sursureste. Combinations using oriente and occidente, such as suroccidente for southwest and nororiente for northeast, are also used. Adjective forms- such as the equivalents of northern and eastern- can be made by preceding the direction with del (literally, of the) as in del norte and del sur to mean northern and southern, respectively. These are indicated below along with the special adjective forms: del norte, norteà ±o, boreal, septentrional - northerndel este, oriental - easterndel sur, sureà ±o, austral, meridional - southerndel oeste, occidental - western To indicate direction of movement, forms such as del oeste or desde el oeste for from the west and hacia el oeste for toward the west are used. Thus, an easterly wind (one coming from the east) is a viento del este, while to say that a door faces east, for example, you could say la puerta mira hacia el este. A few geographical terms use the noun form where the adjectival form might be expected. In particular, the north and south poles are often called the polo norte and polo sur, respectively. Similarly, the northern and southern hemispheres are often called the hemisferio norte and hemisferio sur, respectively, although terms such as hemisferio boreal can also be used. Capitalization of Directions Normally, directions, whether as nouns or adjectives, are not capitalized in Spanish. However, they typically are capitalized when referring to a recognized region. For example: Antes de la guerra de Secesià ³n, la tensià ³n entre el Norte y el Sur era extrema. (Before the Civil War, the tensions between the North and the South was extreme.) However, if you were referring just to the southern U.S. in general, rather the specific states that form a recognized region, capitalization would not be necessary. Directions also are capitalized when part of a name, such as in Carolina del Norte (North Carolina), Corea del Sur (South Korea), and Mercado Comà ºn del Sur (the formal name for the Mercosur, an international South American trading market). Key Takeaways The four main directions of the compass in Spanish come from the same historic roots as the English terms and thus are vaguely similar. The four main directions can be combined to indicate intermediate points, such as noroeste for northwest.Special adjective forms, not always similar to the names of the directions, are sometimes in use. Answer for few Questions Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Answer for few Questions - Assignment Example The rate of criminalization was high in African Americans which lead to black power movement. In 1964, the Black power movement became the civil rights movement as the Democratic Party declined to seat Black Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) (Gilmore, 1998.pp.175). When Black Americans realized the fact that there was no hope for them to obtain equal rights as White Americans, this issue then became the cause of major disorders and riots all over the land. Racism has played an important role in making the criminal history of the United States of America. The inequality in terms of economic rights and social rights caused the Black Americans to become violent. The white people were the true players who fought battles against people of color and different races. Surplus The essential fact behind this crime scene was that moral panic was greater than the crime. There are many crises which combined and resulted in the form of prisons and prisoner. There are social crisis and ec onomic crisis. The history of the crimes and prisons has roots indeed. The United States had the surplus ideology in the name of defence. Whether it was a conflict against Native Americans or the anti-capitalist movements there have been many crises in the history of the United States. During the period of 1970s the nation faced depression and there were surplus of crisis. The consequences of 1973-7 recession were combined with the surplus of 1981-4 recession and again in 1990-4. (Gilmore, 1998. pp 177). Prison Industrial Complex The Prison Industrial complex is the term first used by activist and the scholars to refuse the common thought that the increased rate of crime is the reason of constructing prisons. They argue that the main causes of the increased population of these prisons are profits and racism. There is exploitation of prisoners and the prisons by the big corporations, government and the communities (Davis, 2003.pp. 84). The 13th Amendment The thirteenth Amendment to t he United States constitution officially outlaws slavery except as punishment for crime (Davis, 2003.pp. 23). On April 8, 1864, it was passed by the senate and adopted on December 6, 1865. There was a history of slavery in the United States and it was abolished later, but the concept was so prominent that white abolitionists even found it difficult to imagine Black people equal. After the abolition of slavery, its effects on the society were still present in the forms of lynching and segregation. There is a relation of prisons to the slavery, segregation and lynching because all these social institutions like prison were considered as everlasting as sun. It can be clearly observed that slavery resulted due to racism and there is several evidence of prisons working as racist institutions and they are obsolete, whereas racial discrimination is also observed inside the prison walls and among prisoners. We just consider racism in terms of black and white, but we ignore racism in term am ong colored people. After the September 9, 2011, the mass of people were arrested who were Middle Eastern, South Asian and mainly Muslims. So, the question arises are prisons racist institutions? If it is the case, then like racism the prisons are also obsolete. Prisons are a â€Å"geographical solution to socioeconomic problems†
